John the Baptist was a conduit through which God prepared the way for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It dawned on me once that we today should be channels of blessing preparing the way for the Second Coming of Jesus just like John prepared the way for the First Coming. This thought inspired the following poem which compares the ministry of John the Baptist to the ministry that we should have today.
Like John the Baptist
At His first coming, Christ was announced by John the Baptist in camel’s skin
At His Second Coming, saints in white robes will accompany Him
Let us, like John the Baptist, be the voice that proclaims His arrival!
At His First Coming, angels heralded His appearance to shepherds at His birth
At His Second Coming the Angel Trumpet shall resound to the four corners of the earth
Let us, like John the Baptist, cry, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!”
At His First Coming, His arrival was witnessed by a shining star
At His Second Coming, He Himself shall be the Bright and Morning Star
Let us, like John the Baptist, bear witness to the Light!
At His First Coming, He was a Guest at a wedding feast in Cana of Galilee
At His Second Coming, He will be the Honored Bridegroom for all eternity
Let us, like John the Baptist, be ready to rejoice when the Bridegroom comes!
At His First Coming, He was the Good Shepherd and the Lamb of the Passover
At His Second Coming, He will be the Chief Shepherd and the Slain Lamb worthy forever
Let us, like John the Baptist, point to the Lamb of God which takes away the sins of the world!
At His First Coming, He was born King of the Jews as prophesied in the Word
At His Second Coming , He will reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords
Let us, like John the Baptist, be ready to lay down our lives for His Kingdom!
At His First Coming, Magi bowed before His holiness
At His Second Coming , every knee Shall bow and His Name confess
Let us, like John the Baptist, pray, “May He become more, while we become less.”
One of the ways we can be sure that we will be channels of God’s blessing preparing the way of the Lord is to be prayerful people. Jesus warns us to “Watch and pray, for you do not know when the time is” for His return (Mark13:33). Join us on Sunday mornings as we prepare the way of the Lord by learning how to be channels of blessing from the life of Elijah. This current series will culminate in a weekend prayer emphasis with Dick LeFountain on April 6-7. Please plan to be there!
In Jesus’ love, Pastor Mike
